Teatr w budowie – droga do Spotkania Kultur.

Decyzja o powstaniu gmachu teatru, która zapadła 40 lat temu wynikała z autentycznej potrzeby lokalnego środowiska artystycznego i uwzględniała gusta odbiorców średniego, przemysłowego miasta, jakim wówczas był Lublin. Ale jak to nieraz w historii bywało, funkcjonalny projekt, z poziomu zaspokojenia potrzeb, bardzo szybko awansował do miana pomnika na miarę ówczesnych czasów i ambicji. Nowy teatr miał teraz być nie tyle świątynią sztuki, co manifestacją władzy i tylko władzy znanego dobrobytu. W doczesnych aspiracjach wielkiego teatru na wschodzie ujawniła się w sposób fundamentalny fasadowość całego projektu, jakim była Polska Ludowa.
W przewrotny sposób idea Stanisława Wyspiańskiego, zawarta w słynnych słowach „teatr mój widzę ogromny” zaważyła na krajobrazie Lublina na kolejne, prawie 40 lat. Pozbawiony wnętrzności szkielet z czasem wpisał się w krajobraz centrum miasta, a schowany za drewnianym płotem łagodniał w swoim obliczu, a przynajmniej we wspomnieniach przechodniów. Jak każde straszydło w końcu stracił na mocy i zyskał łagodny przydomek „Teatru w Budowie”, pisany wielką literą.
Do budowy teatru powrócono w połowie lat 90-tych, kiedy nadano tempa pracom wykończeniowym południowej części gmachu, gdzie wkrótce swoją siedzibę otrzymała Filharmonia Lubelska a następnie Teatr Muzyczny. Część pomieszczeń, które zdołano ukończyć w tym trybie wynajmowano przez pewien okres na rzecz zainicjowanego wówczas przez prezydentów Polski i Ukrainy Europejskiego Kolegium Polskich i Ukraińskich Uniwersytetów.
Potrzeba było jeszcze dekady, aby Teatr w Budowie powrócił do gry. Dzięki nowym perspektywom finansowania ze środków europejskich, także dzięki dojrzałości lokalnego samorządu, podjęto decyzję o dokończeniu projektu teatru. I tym razem, na decyzję wpłynęły analiza potrzeb środowiska kulturalnego i ambicje miasta oraz regionu, których wyrazem było przystąpienie Lublina do rywalizacji o tytuł Europejskiej Stolicy Kultury w 2016 roku. Twórczy klimat, jaki kształtował się w mieście inspiracji, autentyczność marki Lubelskie, a także świadoma antycypacja bogatej historii miasta, pisanej na styku kultur, wyznaczyły pozycję Lublina jako miasta opartego o strategię kultury i miasta, które potrzebuje nowoczesnej instytucji kultury w duchu dynamicznych przemian i społecznego potencjału.
W sposób być może niezamierzony, wizja „teatru ogromnego”, znalazła spełnienie w Centrum Spotkania Kultur. Zakorzeniony w swoim dziedzictwie, nowoczesny obiekt przełamuje tradycyjne ograniczenia związane z przestrzenią i czasem. Istotą nowej instytucji ma być pokazanie dziedzictwa regionu w całym bogactwie i niezwykłości, lecz w perspektywie europejskiej, czy szerzej – światowej, bez zbędnych kompleksów i monotonnych narracji. Nowe technologie, język najbliższy młodym pokoleniom, będą dominującym środkiem wyrazu i komunikacji idei. W ten sposób w jednym miejscu będą mogły spotkać się: tożsamość i obcość, konkret i symbol, pragnienie i działanie, pamięć i ulotność, człowiek z człowiekiem. Tak jak pragnąłby Wyspiański, synteza sztuk zakończy Teatr w Budowie i otworzy zupełnie nowy rozdział miejsca Spotkania Kultur.

The Theatre Under Construction – The Road Towards the Meeting of Cultures.

Taken 40 years ago, the decision to build the theatre stemmed from the authentic need of the local art milieu and took into account the aesthetic expectations of the recipients of culture living in the medium-sized industrial city that Lublin then was. However, as history proved numerous times, the fully functional and feasible project, created to fill in the cultural niche, soon ballooned into a larger-than-life monument to the era and its grandiose aspirations. Now, the Theatre was not to become the well-deserved and much-needed temple of the arts but to turn into the manifestation of the upper echelons of power and opulence known to and experienced only by the elites. Soon, these unbridled ambitions were to lay bare the fundamental superficiality of the entire project known as the Polish People’s Republic (1952-1989).
In quite a perverse way, the signature idea of Polish playwright Stanisław Wyspiański, embodied by his phrase “I see my theatre as vast”, imprinted itself on the topography of Lublin for almost four decades. With time, this disembowelled skeleton started to gel with the cityscape of the centre of Lublin: hidden behind wood fencing, the building became a gentler giant, at least in the memories of passers-by. Not unlike any other monstrosity, it eventually ceased to be a blot on the landscape: tamed by the tenderness of its newly acquired capitalised monicker, namely, “The Theatre Under Construction”, it lost its menace.
The construction site was revived in the mid-1990s, when the tempo of the finishing works on the southern part of the edifice sped up. Soon, the Lublin Philharmonic was relocated there, followed by the Music Theatre. Some of the rooms that were finished during that phase were rented to the European College of Polish and Ukrainian Universities, inaugurated at that time by the President of Poland and the President of Ukraine.
It took a decade for the Theatre Under Construction to truly return to game. Thanks to the new perspective of European Union funding as well as to the maturity of the local government, the decision to finish the design of the edifice was taken. As previously, the decision was informed by an analysis of the needs of the local art practitioners and the ambitions shared by the municipality and the region, which were embodied by the entry of Lublin in the 2016 European Capital of Culture Competition. The veritable climate of creativity that prevailed in the City of Inspiration, the authenticity of the “Lubelskie” brand as well as the conscious tapping into the rich history of Lublin, written at the crossroads of cultures, contributed to the positioning Lublin as a city with culture as one its core strategies, a city that needs a modern institution of culture typified by an ability to respond to dynamic changes and harness the social potential of the region.
Perhaps inadvertently, the vision of “the vast theatre” was materialised as the Centre for the Meeting of Cultures. Rooted in its heritage, this state-of-the-art building breaks free of the traditional constraints of time and space. The very essence of the institution is to showcase the cultural legacy of the region in all its richness and uniqueness, and to do so with the European, or – more broadly – global perspective in mind, without recourse to overused monotonous narratives and unnecessary complexes. New technologies, alongside the idiom of the younger generations, will be the dominant means of expression and an avenue of communication of ideas. Subsequently, under a single roof, a plurality of meetings will take place: meetings between identity and strangeness, the concrete and the symbolic, desires and actions, memory and evanescence, an individual and an individual. Here, as Wyspiański would want it, a synthesis of the arts will end the era of the Theatre Under Construction and open a brand new chapter of the site – a place where cultures meet.
